Tokyo Story - a brief comment
May 7th, 2007 by Bill
Last night I watched Yasujiro Ozu’s Tokyo Story (Tôkyô monogatari) (1953). How is it a movie made more than 50 years ago can be so relevant today?
I wish I had the time right to ramble on about it but I have a crew of people with hammers, saws and drills in my house as I’m in the middle of some significant renovations.
(The younger me would never have imagined me writing a sentence like the one above, at least not with a straight face.)
Hopefully I can take some time in the next few days to jot down some thoughts regarding Tokyo Story. I have the Criterion Collection DVD of the movie, which is a two disc set and includes the two hour documentary I’ve yet to watch, I Lived, But … (Ikite wa mita keredo - Ozu Yasujirô den) (1983). I’m very anxious to watch that.
I was just interrupted by renovation questions … must go!

Tokyo Story is such a beautiful film. I hope you do ramble on about it. I think more people should see it and ramble on about it!
